If your streaming life includes a personal media collection or cloud gaming, the requirements change: you need USB ports, Ethernet, transcoding muscle and controller support. Most streaming devices fail at least one. These don't.
How we chose: We research each box against Plex, GeForce NOW and Luna documentation — transcoding support, controller compatibility, ports and networking — and cross-check with verified owner reports.
Plex server vs Plex client
Every box here can play from a Plex server running elsewhere. Only the SHIELD TV Pro can be the server — hosting your library and transcoding it for other devices. If you want one box that does everything, the SHIELD is the whole list.
Cloud gaming services
GeForce NOW streams games you own on PC stores; Xbox Cloud Gaming comes with Game Pass Ultimate; Luna is Amazon's service. Check which service your box supports before buying — Apple TV lacks GeForce NOW, for example.
Controllers
Xbox and PlayStation controllers pair over Bluetooth with every box in this guide. NVIDIA's own controller and the Luna controller add direct-to-cloud connections that shave input lag.
Storage and ports
The SHIELD Pro's USB 3.0 ports accept external drives for media libraries. Apple TV and Google TV Streamer rely on network storage. For local playback without a server, the SHIELD's USB port or the Roku Ultra's USB media player are the simple answers.
