The symptom
Troubleshooting
Apple TV
The Siri Remote does nothing, some buttons work while the clickpad doesn't, or the Apple TV says the remote battery is critically low right after charging.
The likely causes
Work from the top — the list runs from most common to least common.
- A drained battery (they last months, then die suddenly)
- Lost Bluetooth pairing
- Charging with a bad cable or port
- Software stuck on the Apple TV
- A failed remote
The fixes, in order
-
Charge it properly first
Plug the Siri Remote into a USB-C cable (or Lightning on the 1st-gen Siri Remote) connected to a wall charger for at least 30 minutes. Computer USB ports charge slowly. Check the level at Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote.
-
Restart the Apple TV
Unplug the Apple TV from power for ten seconds, then reconnect. If the remote is fully dead, restart via Settings using the Apple TV Remote in your iPhone's Control Center instead.
-
Re-pair the remote
Hold the remote within three inches of the Apple TV, then press and hold the Back button and Volume Up together for five seconds. A 'Remote Connected' message appears on screen.
-
Restart the remote itself
Press and hold the TV/Control Center button and Volume Down together for five seconds until the Apple TV status light flashes, then release. The remote reboots and reconnects.
-
Check for interference and distance
The remote works over Bluetooth — solid cabinets and sitting far from the TV can break the link. Test with a clear line to the box.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the remote won't hold a charge overnight, never shows as connected after re-pairing, or has a physically stuck clickpad, contact Apple Support — Siri Remotes are covered by the Apple TV's warranty and are sold separately if out of coverage.
Official support: Apple's official Apple TV support. FoxStream publishes guides and is not an official support channel for Apple TV.
Worth knowing
- Your iPhone's Control Center has a full Apple TV Remote built in — add it once and you'll never be stuck.
- Charge the remote overnight every few months rather than waiting for the low-battery warning.
Common mistakes
- Trying to pair from the couch instead of next to the box.
- Assuming the Apple TV is broken when only the remote's battery died.
