The symptom
Troubleshooting
Smart TVs
A single streaming app crashes to the home screen, freezes on its logo, or shows an error code while other apps work fine.
The likely causes
Work from the top — the list runs from most common to least common.
- Corrupted app cache or data
- An outdated app version
- Low storage on the streaming device
- The service's servers having issues
- A system update the app needs
The fixes, in order
-
Restart the device first
A full system restart (from the settings menu, not just sleep) clears the memory state that causes most crashes. Test the app before doing anything else.
-
Clear the app's cache or data
Fire TV: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > [app] > Clear cache, then Clear data. Google TV/Android TV: Settings > Apps > [app] > Clear cache. Roku doesn't expose cache clearing — removing and reinstalling the channel (next step) does the same job.
-
Remove and reinstall the app
Delete the app, restart the device, then reinstall it fresh and sign back in. On Roku: highlight the channel, press Star, Remove channel, restart, reinstall from the Channel Store.
-
Check storage space
Devices with full storage misbehave. Fire TV: Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage. Delete apps you don't use; keep at least 500 MB free.
-
Update everything
Update the app from the app store, then check for a device system update. Crash fixes ship in both.
-
Check if the service is down
Search the service name on downdetector.com or check its status page. A widespread outage needs patience, not troubleshooting.
When to contact the manufacturer
If one app crashes on your device but works on your phone and other devices — and reinstalling didn't help — contact the streaming service's support with your device model and app version. If every app crashes, contact the device maker.
FoxStream publishes guides and is not an official support channel for any brand — always use the manufacturer's official support site or the number printed in your device's documentation.
Worth knowing
- Sign-out-then-sign-in inside the app fixes account-state glitches without a reinstall.
- After major device OS updates, reinstall your two most-used apps preemptively.
Common mistakes
- Factory-resetting the whole device for one bad app.
- Ignoring storage warnings for months.
