Setup Guide
Google TV
Chromecast with Google TV is the compact way to get Google's streaming interface: a small HDMI dongle, a voice remote, and the same recommendations engine as the newer Google TV Streamer. Setup runs through your phone.
What you'll need
- The Chromecast, remote, power cable and adapter
- A phone with the Google Home app
- A Google account
- Your Wi-Fi password
The steps
-
Plug in the dongle
Connect the Chromecast to an HDMI port, then plug the USB-C power cable into the dongle and the wall adapter. TV USB ports often under-power it; use the adapter.
-
Switch inputs and pair the remote
Select the right HDMI input on the TV. Insert the remote's batteries; it pairs automatically and shows an on-screen confirmation.
-
Scan the QR code with Google Home
The TV displays a QR code. Open the Google Home app, tap Devices > Add > Set up device, and scan it. The app takes over from here.
-
Choose Wi-Fi and sign in
Pick your network, confirm your Google account, and name the room. The Chromecast updates itself — give it a few minutes.
-
Set up remote TV controls
When prompted (or later under Settings > Remotes & accessories), select your TV brand so the remote handles power and volume.
-
Choose your services
Select the streaming apps you use so recommendations match your subscriptions, then install your apps from the home screen.
Worth knowing
- Casting still works: tap the cast icon in phone apps to send video to the Chromecast.
- The Google TV mobile app doubles as a remote with a keyboard — much easier for passwords.
- Ambient mode can show your Google Photos; pick albums during setup.
Common mistakes
- Powering from a weak TV USB port, causing random reboots.
- Skipping the remote TV-control step.
- Trying to set up through a browser instead of the Google Home app.
