The onn 4K Pro packs Google TV, Dolby Vision, 32 GB of storage and a backlit voice remote into one of the cheapest 4K boxes sold. Activation is free and runs through your Google account — never pay a third party to 'register' it.

What you'll need

  • The onn 4K Pro box, remote, power adapter and an HDMI cable
  • A Google account
  • A phone with the Google Home app (fastest method)
  • Your Wi-Fi password

The steps

  1. Connect the box

Plug the onn box into a free HDMI port and connect the power adapter to the wall. Switch the TV to that HDMI input.

  2. Pair the remote

Insert the included AAA batteries. The remote usually pairs automatically; if not, hold the Home and Back buttons together for five seconds near the box.

  3. Choose language and start Google setup

Pick English (or your language) and choose 'Set up with the Google Home app' for the fastest path, or 'Set up on TV' if you prefer the remote.

  4. Sign in to your Google account

Scan the on-screen QR code with your phone or enter your email with the remote. Activation registers the device to your Google account — this is free.

  5. Connect to Wi-Fi

Select your network and enter the password. The box checks for a system update immediately; let it install before doing anything else.

  6. Pick apps and finish

Choose the streaming services you use so they install now. The home screen appears after a short sync.

  7. Set remote TV controls

Go to Settings > Remotes & accessories > Set up remote buttons and select your TV brand so power and volume work from the onn remote.

Worth knowing

  • Run Settings > System > About > System update once more after setup — a second update often waits behind the first.
  • The remote's finder feature: press the button on the box and the remote chirps.
  • Free cloud DVR of setup: none needed — every app keeps its own watchlist once you sign in.

Common mistakes

  • Paying an 'activation service'. onn devices activate free through Google.
  • Stopping the first update halfway; that causes most day-one crashes.
  • Skipping remote TV-control setup and juggling two remotes.
